A jar for the cookie swap

A Christmas jar holds the batch you bake for the swap, the neighbors and the cookie plate for Santa, and it comes out of the attic with the ornaments. The ones here are mostly porcelain and hand-painted ceramic: a 3-D Santa, a snowy barn, a Grinch, an evergreen Santa from Cosmos Gifts and the pastry boxes Villeroy & Boch makes for its winter lines.

Several are as much decoration as storage. A porcelain pastry box or a figural Santa looks right on a sideboard, but its lid sits on the rim; if the cookies need to last the week, the red tin with its fitted lid is the practical one. Wash the painted jars by hand, and they come back looking new next December.

Questions

Christmas cookie jars: what people ask

Can you leave a Christmas cookie jar out all year?

You can, but most of these are made to be seasonal: a Santa or a Grinch reads as Christmas in July. If you want one jar for the whole year, look at the neutral glass and ceramic shelves and add a ribbon in December.

How do you store a porcelain Christmas cookie jar after the holidays?

Wash and dry it fully, wrap the lid separately, and pack it in its own box with the lid off the rim. A lid packed in place can chip the rim on the way down from the attic.
