Holiday cookie jars, season by season

A holiday jar comes out with the decorations and goes back in the box with them. That changes what to look for: a jar that packs flat in its own box, survives a year in the attic and still has its lid in one piece next December.

The Christmas jars here run from porcelain pastry boxes and a stacked snowman to 3-D Santas and a barn scene. Halloween and fall bring glass pumpkins, a gothic candy jar and a harvest pumpkin. Most are porcelain or hand-painted ceramic, and most ask to be washed by hand.

If a jar holds cookie-swap batches for a week, check the lid. The airtight ones keep a tin of gingerbread soft; the decorative ones are better for wrapped candy or a single evening.

With the rest of the decorations, usually the weekend after Thanksgiving, so it is ready for the first cookie swap. Halloween and fall jars come out in early October.
