When acrylic beats glass

Acrylic looks like glass from across the room and weighs a fraction of it. It is the jar for a counter a child can reach, a candy table at a party, or an office where the jar gets carried from desk to desk.

Most jars on this shelf come in sets of two, three, four or six, in matching or graduated sizes, so a candy bar or a pantry shelf lines up. A few close with a gasket and a latch; the rest have a lid that lifts off.

Acrylic scratches where glass does not. Wash it with a soft cloth, keep it away from the oven, and check the label before it goes in a dishwasher: some of these jars say yes, others ask for hand washing.

Questions

About acrylic and unbreakable cookie jars

Is an acrylic cookie jar better than glass for your counter?

It is lighter and it does not break, which matters on a counter a child can reach or on a party table. Glass resists scratches better and can usually take hotter water.

How do you clean an acrylic cookie jar without scratching it?

Warm water, a drop of dish soap and a soft cloth. Skip scouring pads and check the card before the jar goes in a dishwasher.
