Tins and metal jars

A tin does what a jar cannot: it travels. Fill it, close it, carry it to a neighbor or a school bake sale, and nobody worries about the walk. Nesting tins stack inside one another when they are empty, which is why they are the usual choice for cookie swaps.

The metal jars here sit at the other end. A powder-coated iron jar with a bamboo lid stands on the counter like a canister, and a stainless biscuit tin closes with a fitted lid. Tins are light, they do not chip, and they do not care if a child drops one.

Keep a tin dry. Wipe it rather than soak it, and dry the seam before the lid goes back on: a painted tin is not a dishwasher item unless its maker says so.

Questions

About cookie tins and metal cookie jars

Will cookie tins keep your cookies fresh?

A tin with a fitted lid keeps cookies well for days, and it is the usual choice for carrying a batch to a friend. Wipe it dry and keep it out of the sink.

Can you wash a cookie tin in the dishwasher?

Painted and printed tins usually cannot; water gets into the seams and the print wears. Wipe the inside with a damp cloth and dry it before the lid goes on.
